this only gets to play on the international playground because of the taboo nature of the judeo/christian mythos.
no one boycotted anything or raised any alarms when 'interview with the vampire' or 'queen of damned' varied so very much from the anne rice-penned novels they were drawn from.
the bible is a historical document...hmmmm. i'd say the bible is historical documents, plural. it documents/purports a multitude of things, across seeming thousands of years of human time...canon yes, encyclopedia? no. even the synoptics have continuity issues and apparent incompatibilities, but they recorded the life of someone important, whether he was god's son or not is not for me to say.
as far as i am concerend mel gobson is adapating a novel into a film. if he wants to stay true to the book is he drawing it from, he is more than welcome...i don't really believe it deserves any more additional baggage than kevin adapting a fletch book.
