Nah I am in the same boat as you. That is why I think I would just want to shoot my first one myself and hopefully get it shown on some of the festival circuits or something. Then you hope that someone like Harvey Weinstein see's it and likes it and you are set.
Or you go into killer debt for nothing and fuck yourself over. Either or atleast you have a film made.
