The mini-series is closer to the novel...that is, in fact, the reason the the mini-series was created in the first place. Stephen King was not impressed with the outcome of the Kubrick version, so he took it upon himself to show the folks at home how he would have liked to see it.
I find it's best to keep the two separate, the novel (and the mini-series for that matter) - one entity, Kubrick's film - an entirely different entity.
