9:15 pm. Seven people pulled into a rest stop, just outside of River City, Iowa. Two teenage girls in a red convertible, two brothers in their mid-thirties driving a Ford Bronco, a truck driver in a big rig, a soccer mom in a mini-van and a state trooper. The national weather service had posted a severe thunderstorm warning for the area. A phone call was placed to Thompson Truck and Toe at exactly 9:23 pm, by a Jeffery Doyle, the eldest of the two brothers. Similar messages where placed to two other toeing services as Thompson Truck and Toe only had two available trucks, and none of the four vehicles would start. The Policeman, officer John Deerdorf, being the last to arrive called dispatch at exactly 9:33. The call recorded nothing but static in the dispatch computer, but the dispatcher says the Officer Deerdorf described his patrol car’s condition and the state of the other vehicles a being “dead in the water”. Each vehicle, once parked at the rest stop, became immobilized. The electrical systems of all five vehicles completely shut down. The officer remained in his vehicle, as did the truck driver, the two brothers, and the soccer mom. The two teenage girls took shelter in the rest area’s building, as the soft top to their car failed to keep out the rain.

Thompson’s first truck arrived on the scene at approximately 10:05. Policed arrived on the scene at approximately 10:17. Found on the floors of the Ford Bronco, the big rig, the mini-van, the patrol car, and the lobby of the rest area’s building was copious amounts of blood. When the doors to the vehicles where opened, gallons of blood pored out. In the rest area building lobby blood spread out from wall to wall, covering every inch of the floor. No bodies were found. The investigation showed that the blood type of each person matched the different blood found at the rest stop. Investigators could find nothing wrong with the electrical systems of the cars.

Only one factor was found that every victim had in common. At multiple times in each of their lives, they had purposely parked on the line, taking up two spots.
