Having 6 days off from work last week, I managed to go to the movies 3 times as well as watch more then a few dvds. Here is what I thought.
1. Winged Migration: a very touching piece of cinematic documentary. It made me ponder on the fact that even though birds have hollow bones and seem so fragile, they can still travel thousands of miles in all sorts of conditions, risking life and wing.
2. Mr. Barrington: an independent film written, directed, and starring a woman from Portland, Maine (where I am now), it reminded me of a darker, sadder version of Drop Dead Fred, with a touch of Paddington Bear. Also, the director/star, Jennifer Nicole Porter, also wrote and performed the score for the movie.
3. American Splendor: Seeing this movie made me an even bigger fan of Paul Giamatti. It could be considered a "comic book movie", since it's about Harvey Pekar, writer of the "American Splendor" comics. The great thing about this movie, is that Harvey Pekar is actually in the movie, doing a sort of narration/commentary. Also, it takes place in Cleveland, where my brother goes to college.
As I mentioned above, I watched some DVDs as well.
1. Poltergeist 1,2,3: The first two were really cool, as most of you probably know, despite the fact that they never explained the disapearence of the oldest daughter in the second movie.
2. Donnie Darko: I rented it, but I like it so much, I went out and bought it. Maybe it was the freaky rabbit, maybe it was the hypnotism scenes, but I was just amazed at how good it was. Also, the soundtrack is very good. I hope to buy it next week. Tears for Fears ROCKS!
3. Hellraiser 3: Having just bought the first two recently, I figured I might as well rent the sequals individualy. This one is severely lacking in talent and plot, but Doug Bradley always comes through, both as Pinhead and as the human incarnation. Also, the new Cenobites were pretty cool.
4. From Hell: I love Johnny Depp. Robbie Coltrane was also very good, breaking away from the "Hagrid" stereotype that will probably follow him for the rest of his acting career. It was a bit predictable, but Ian Holm is a superb actor. I plan to get my hair the color of Heather Graham's.
That's it!
