I'm currently writing a script based on a Saturday Morning Cartoon. I contacted the company that owns the rights and they said that I can write whatever the fuck (not their words) I want, I can do anything with their characters, I could turn it into a porno, but I'd have to get it copyrighted before I can send it for them to read. Of course, they wouldn't like their characters in a porno, which is why I'm making a GOOD adaptation, but the point is that once I start writing, I can make them MY characters, but the final word is still that of the owners.

If you just want to write it to prove something, you still have to copyright it before anyone (with power) can read it, and since you aren't planning to sell it, I'm fairly sure you don't need to send it to the author to get his approval, unless he's the one you want to prove it to.
