It was an original idea. Something that horror films have not seen in a long time.
It was also humorous - intentionally humerous. What about the townies? They were not that way to be serious. It was all campy fun.
The same goes for the blood in the film. It was extreme for funness of it. Think of Evil Dead 2.
The characters/setting was really an homage to horror films of yesteryear. Sure you may not have cared for them, but you weren't really supposed to. The movie was to be that or a 'ride' for the audience.
