And who am I? Well, I just finished writing my sixth novel, and though I haven't published them yet, this is the one subject I know a thing or two about. I just saw something in your post:

This is basic, but not bad. A million good stories have been based on this. But the greatest stories don't tell the reader that the guy fucked up, they don't tell the reader that people think of him differently. The great stories tell how the man was, what he did, how he changed, and the reaction of the other characters. If the writing is successfull, the reader will come to this conclusion: Man, that guy fucked up, and now everyone thinks of him differntly.
You probably know all this and simplified it for posting sake, but if you want to talk more just let me know
