You get judged by your body of work in a directing category. Thereby at the Oscars Soderbergh was being judged for Traffic and Erin Brockovich. There wasn't anything were because he was nominated for both he would only get one slot or automatically win for having the most noms.

The same with guest directors and split-shift series directors. I believe Buscemi was up last year or the year before that for directing the Sopranos EP where Christopher and Paulie were lost in the Pine Barrens.

It didn't matter who wrote it or that he might have only done that episode, it was that episode that the academy gave the nod.
