They were actually talking about bringing him back somehow for a couple of episodes at the beginning of Season 5. Joss Whedon mentioned it in an interview that I can't find at the moment, but I remember it wasn't too long after I read the article that I saw that he had died of an overdose so probably November of last year.
He was also one of the main characters in R.S.V.P. which also starred Jason Mewes.
Drugs are bad..mmm'kay.
