I would agree that most of the "the bands" are overrated, not that they necessarily suck, but they're just peforming novelty nostalgia music competently and would be better suited to some festival or bar than mass media fame. I will take exception to The Hives however, in that they've been doing it for years and years in Sweden and the album that got them "big" in the states was released in 1999 and just now got around to seeing some kind of exposure in the states. I've been a fan of theirs for a while, though just because they perform a style of music I like rather well with some amusing showmanship...I haven't given more than a few minutes listen to any of those other bands besides The White Stripes, who have also been doing it for quite a while and been making good albums for years...and have a sincerity and playfullness to them that I like a lot better than the snotty "I just turned 21 and isn't holding a beer while I play so cool? You wouldn't beleive how long it takes to get my hair this messy" bands.
: The Strokes, The Libertines, The Vines, The Hives - What have any of these bands done other than just sound like a shitty garage band? I mean, I have to give points for lack of overproduction. Luckily, all of these bands will fess up to rather hardcore recreational drug use, so eventually they'll disappear. (note that The White Stripes appear NOWHERE in this paragraph.)
