...they certainly didn't rap it all up nice and neat, but, barring the addition of some arbitrary and ridiculous capacity for resurrection to Neo's abilities, I'm pretty sure the story is over.
I am actually happy that the film ended without an ultimate victory for the humans, as that would have been a tall fucking order to accomplish within Neo's millenium, much less his lifetime. I am, however, somewhat annoyed at the implication of some retarded hippy peace between the factions. This is not a war between humans. This is between humans and damned dirty machines, a group that can be justifiably categorized as the "other", and worthy only of our hatred. Even with the Animatrix's revelation that the man/machine conflict is the fault of human pigheadedness, the best course for mankind in this case is to clean up its own mess, not accept their twisted creations as another denizen of the planet. I prefer to think that Neo saved Zion to allow it continue to thrive and develop and thus have a greater chance at defeating the machines.
In the end, though, the strengths of this film were the big action sequences. It finally delevired major man/machine conflict in the real world, which is what I had been waiting on since I saw the first film. Those APUs were badass in action. And, of course, the Dragon Ball Z final showdown. Impeccable.
Just out of curiosity, what exactly do you think it was that Neo did/allowed to happen at the end of the fight with him and Smith?
