Least they could've done is write a quick aside about how the machines are inherently programmed to serve mankind (ala Asimov) and thus can't destroy them.

: Yes, I had this qualm before the lessening of the series by the sequels. (Nevertheless, I did enjoy them, probably because my hopes weren't unattainably high.)
