...that he played a similar character. PTA wanted to show such a character in a realistic light as someone with a personality/mental disorder of some sort - to bring a humanlike quality to it. It worked since we sympathize with Sandler as someone who has troubles & is not just some ordinary goofball. Sandlers's character in this movie is someone we really feel sorry for, and not as some class clown.
