The best reason I can think of is at the very end, after the credits, we see Kevin playing a no-name character who's trying to buy some cigarettes but can't since no one is there, so he reaches behind the counter and steals them. It kind of but an odd little laugh on the original ending. Unfortunately, not everyone sits until the end of the credits.
