As for Matrix, the original worked because the philosphy was the subtext, rather than an ever-presence. There was also a sense of danger, whereas Neo's oneness rather dampens that sense. He's a bit like Superman without kryptonite.
And Mergovian is one of the most pointless characters in the whole world.
