PJ had long wanted to do it and he got it rolling.

I can still remember my daughter telling me about the project four years or so back.. I felt dismayed.. prepared for another disappointment (ie.. Bakshi's LOTR.. didn't know much about PJ at the time other than the Frighteners, which I'd loved.. but I was so sour on Hollywood that it had made me a bit nihilistic). She was positively blissful about it, had been wanting to see a definitive film on Tolkien's epic since she started reading the books at the age of 9. After curiosity got the better of me, I went to Sir Ian's web site and after reading his on the set reports (still slightly in trepidation.. my head couldn't get around the thought of Liv Tyler adding anything to the project.. No, I'm not a snob! At the time she was just Steve T and Bebe B's kid to me.. hey, I admit, she did a great job and I was wrong.. I also freaked when I heard about any American being cast at the time. But PJ made some fantastic decisions.) I was hooked along with the rest of the hordes.
