Peter Jackson wrote a screenplay for "The Hobbit" which I Think Miramax owned. They wanted to make a 2 hour movie of the Hobbit (starring Willow's Warwick Davis). I think it was Miramax's idea to switch to Lord of the Rings, and the plan was to make the 3 books into just 2, 2 hour films.
Jackson wanted to make 3 films, but Miramax wouldn't budge.
New Line optioned the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and offered Jackson pretty much enough money and resources to make the 3 films.
About a year ago, Peter Jackson said he would like to Produce "The Hobbit" as a Miniseries, just this week I read that he would like to make the Hobbit as a film, with a lot of the LOTR actors.
: The story behind the story? Any info at all? I don't think I've read or seen anything about it.
: Also, I just watched a "Making of . . ." on TTT special features and Jackson commented that TTT was pretty much in the can before FOTR came out. I find myself wondering if the huge success of FOTR will have had an impact on the making of ROTK. It will be interesting to see.
