I remember reading about the show that the girls asked if they could wear normal scrubby clothes for working on the farm and the producers said no, that the designer clothes would work better for the theme of the show. It's an easy way to create the contrast between these ultra-wealthy girls and the lifestyle of the farmers.
All of these "reality shows" are like that. I watched some serious amounts of Real World back in the day, and in any interviews I've read with the former cast members - they all mention the editing as a factor. I mean, they take a small fight between people, and create a storyline by editing.
