: I love comedies. I wouldn't be here if I didn't. But I'm talking greatness. Movies that spark discussion and analysis. Comedies spark quotations and memorable scenes. Comedies are remembered by those funny lines and bits. Great films are remembered as a whole, by the message, by the plot, by the direction, and the characters.
first of all, many comedies are historic and remembered as a whole or by characters. Comedies have been just as important to cinema as dramas or any other genere. If you loved a comedy, I think that holds just as much wait as loving a drama. Casablanca might be a better directed, better shot, better acted with a better message than Big Lebowski, but i'll be damned if I say I enjoyed it more. And thats why I think entertainment value is #1 on the list of important movies. Movies were made for entertainment, not to send a message. Directors and writers came along and changed that throughout the years for sure, but entertainment value should always be at the top of a list. Who wants to see a boring movie that is historically acurate, historical, beautifully shot, directed, written, acted, and edited if the stuff just doesn't come together in a way that you would want to spend 8 bucks and 2 hours of your life with.
