She sacrificed herself, and I think the gesture was to be displayed by how futile any attempt would have been to try to save her. And it shows that there are in fact limits to these mutants' powers. They can be over-powered, and I take comfort in knowing that nature supplies many such phenomena that are too powerful for them to handle. But that's just my take on it.
