: Sure John Lennon's death was a major point in history.
: So was the bombing of Pearl Harbour.
: So was assassination of Lincoln.
: So was the Magna Carta.
: So was the death of Caesar Augustus.
: So were many other individual events on individual dates.
: But you don't see us pointing to the obscure anniversary of any of these events.
: Not that I mind, but thats the point being made.
But to say that Lennon had the same bearing on history as WWII or the Magna Carta is ludicrous. Obviously it won't be apparent till after all of us are gone, but pop music doesn't influence the history of the planet as much as some would claim. And I would point out I think the Beatles and Lennon in particular were far far overrated, but I don't want anyone to think that I'm "piling on." I just don't think it's a very significant date, or fact, and has zero bearing for over 99% of the world.
