Do you know what intelligence is? At its simplest, intelligence is the ability to see a pattern. I can guarantee you that lawyers and business, in general, couldn't hold a candle to a science professional.
Secondly, intellect has quite an effect on "personality and career interest". The fundamental nature of science to derive the mechanisms of the universe and the most intelligent people have an insatiable curiosity to understand, "Why?". Law and business do not provide answers, they provide (necessary) services.

Quick Google search yielded me nothing but anecdotally, I have yet to meet a conservative with a (scientific) doctorate. Surely they exist but are certainly the distinct minority.

I'm saying that only the most intelligent people can become doctors, not that the degree makes them intelligent. The degree is an indicator. Also, I'm not saying that all doctors are smarter than all lawyers and buinessmen, I'm saying that the average doctor is brighter than the average lawyer or businessman.
