...but I have to agree with Tom on this one. You're forgetting most of the original punk bands (read: from 1977, London, etc.) were signed to major labels (Clash - CBS, Pistols - Virgin). This is largely because there was no real independent scene to speak of. The only way to get your material heard on ANY level was to sign with a conglomerate. It wasn't until the days of SST in the early 80's did bands adopt that stance, if you will.
Personally, I feel Lydon's pose has become tired. I used to find his contemptual nature endearing but now it's just a bad joke....
