i think that a huge chunk o' the flap is that marriage is considered a religious ceremony and the
people who are freaking out about gay marriages are doing so out of religious beliefs (retarded
as they may be)
so what i would like to see is a governmental disctinction between a religious ceremony (a
wedding) and a civil union. If you'd like to be joined in the eyes of the government there would
be certain steps to take (including a renamed "marriage" license...) and if you would also like to
be joined in the eyes of yr church then there are certain additional steps that must be taken to
satisfy your church's needs.... one of which may be "you can't be gay" depending on the church.
then everybody would be able to have the rights and benefits associated with a "marriage" at the
government level without the bible thumpers crying about the "sanctity" of the event. There's
nothing sacred about a government policy and if their church doesn't want 'em they don't have to
have 'em.
government is supposed to be by and for the people, not certain people... THE people.
Everybody should have the same rights...
