He gave Ashcroft a job. Ashcroft lost his local election to a dead guy (literally) in 2000. So Bush appoints him to one of the highest positions of authority in the country? The people who knew his ability best from his home state had so little faith in him that they elected a dead man (whose widdow in effect took office by some strange government loophole) and Bush decides he deserves a promotion. Whatever. Ashcroft is evil.
