is that they could fit in any category you want to put them in. Punk, Rock, Metal, introspective-
singer-songwriter, whatever.
I would honestly consider nirvana the only band that fit the "grunge" name... Kurt Cobain wrote
brilliant pop songs and then dirtied them up into a Tad / Melvins / Pixies coctail.
Nirvana didn't belong in the same category as those other seattle bands... Nirvana were much
more akin to Unrest, Fugazi, Superchunk,The Melvins, TAD, Versus, The Minutemen / fIREHOSE,
Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Slint, Joy Division, The Pixies, The Breeders, Throwing
Muses, etc.
Name one other band that brought the obscure to the forefront and wore their influences on
their sleeves (literally in terms of kurt's K Records tattoo) How many bowie fans are fans now
because of Nirvana's Unplugged album... Leadbelly? howzabout the Meat Puppets... The
Vaselines... how many Germs records sold after Pat Smear joined up... Pixies... The Raincoats
(Sonic Youth were a big part of their renaissance, too). The Velvet Underground? the Pastels?
In the grand scheme of things Nirvana changed the face of music and positively influenced the
lives of those who had influenced and brought them joy while Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In
Chains, et al. were rock bands who wore flannel shirts.
