...classics that everybody else is mentioning (Slaughterhouse 5, Cat's Cradle, etc), I'd really recommend Hocus Pocus. It's one of his later books, but has some of his best characterization.

Also, seek out the movie version of Mother Night. Now. Best Vonnegut adaptation, and one of my favorite book-to-film translations ever.
