My response is really late, but...
Blackouts happen when a game is run on an affliliate, or a station that owns rights to either of the teams playing. They basically reserve the right to "black revenue out" from your satellite provider. Like, the local station gets dibs on the advertising for the home team.
Anyway, if you have the dish, you need either local basic cable or a good antenna to go along with it. That will cover games shown on your local affiliates. I'm sure you already get ESPN and whatnot through DirecTV.
I get the NFL package on mine here in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers, Browns and Ravens games are always blacked out, as well as the Monday Night game.
Bottom line, you're going to miss some beloved Yankee games no matter what, because they're a high-profile team with a national fanbase. If they're playing, say, the Braves, Ted Turner is going to black out DirecTV.
