.....by the music's sound, but its statement. At the time when grunge originated, hair bands that sang love ballads and hard-rocking hits with lots of glamour were the norm. However, several bands came into their own by not emphasizing the pop aspect of rock, but more its darker, slightly more skewed side. Grunge music is merely a label for rock music that wasn't defined under the hair band style of the time. It ranged from Nirvana to Pearl Jam to Days of the New to The Smashing Pumpkins and everything in between. Even Metallica, to some music experts, has been attributed as being part of the grunge revolution, though those who have done extensive studying on the subject purport that this is false.
