There were NO Christians then. In Judaic law, you were stoned to death publicly for simply uttering God's name. This young, Jewish guy came along and did more than just that, he went as far as to claim to be the son of God. Now, he preached love and forgiveness, had a following and would be tough to get a mob against him. He was a disturber of the peace though, so the government (the Romans), excecuted him. It wasn't popular, not even with the Pontius Pilot himself, going so far as a public hearing for clemency, but the public chose the thief to set free instead. A thief, whi then went on to become a follower of Jesus's message. Many men have been martyred preaching kindness and forgiveness, all great stories, and many movies based upon them. This just happens to be one of them. Now, if you have a problem with the Jesus story, take issue with the source material, the New Testament. That's what Gibson's going off of, everyone needs to have the nerve to say what they're really against, because that's what's at the root here.
