The other night my girlfriend and I were over some friend’s house engaging in an existentialistic conversation as to where do we go when we slip off from this mortal coil. Is there a heaven? And if so what is expected of us in life so as to be assured a place? Do we in fact have a soul that can transubstantiate into another plain of existence, or perhaps be reincarnated into another life?
My girlfriend proposed an interesting concept or theory if you will. What if we recycled from one life into another learning more and adding to that which was experienced in past lives until a soul reaches a high enough level to ascend into the next plain of existence?
This theory of course drove us to wonder of those we have personally known or known of in our lifetime, which do we believe have reached a high level perhaps nearing this greater plain of existence?
Of the regular list of names you might expect (Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, Jim Henson, etc…), my girlfriend proposed George Carlin. And it got me to thinking. Have you ever really heard his take on life? It is not a far stretch to understand why a very smart creative man, who is very much in tune with the human condition, and that most on this message board idolize, would hold George Carlin in such high regard.
The bottom line is that on March 26th, my girlfriend is going because it is a George Carlin film; I am going to see Jersey Girl because it is a Kevin Smith film. One to see a soul rounding home plate, the other to see one trailing not far behind.
