: I'm not that knowledgable on such things, but it sounded like he was doing what the Gospels said. I guess he changed things for dramatic purposes, but isn't everything in the film in those Gospels in some way?

According to the King James Version, which I believe is the book Gibson used.

The account of Jesus' last twelve hours can be found in the Book of John, chapters 18 and 19. If you haven't seen the movie yet, but want to, I suggest you read those two chapters in particular first, so that you can see the differences first hand.

Several lines of dialogue were added, and there is no mention of them in the Bible. There were some inaccuracies or perhaps under/over exaggerations in certain characters; that of Pilate being the most glaring. Although most of his dialogue was accurate, Pilate, historically speaking, has never been described as a sympathetic man, yet the movie portrayed him that way.

The Bible also does not speak to the flogging Jesus received - at least not in an overly descriptive way, yet the movie goes into graphic detail of that part of his last hours. There is no mention of canes or whips being used, especially whips with shards of glass in the ends.
