: A couple days ago I had a nasty hard drive crash. If you're using XP and you're the only person using your computer (or you don't have sensitive material), consider not using the My Documents folder or placing files in Windows subdirectories.

: The reason is if you use reinstall XP over again (like I had to) it wipes out all user settings and files in Windows subdirectories. I got lucky, and save most of my stuff in directories in my root. The folders on my desktop aren't folders, but shortcuts to folders in my root. The upshot is the only files I lost on my reinstall were files on my desktop and stuff in My Documents. Otherwise, I'd be fucking screwed. I did lose all my e-mails (they're stored in a windows sub) so in the future I'm going to use something to back them up.

: Just thought I'd share some insight in the hell that was my 2 days of fixing my damn computer.

XP stores user info in the "documents & settings" folder, not under Windows. If you want to save that info, just grab the folder named after your username. Easy.
