: The book is a history of the "genre" of independent film. Sure films were made independently prior to the late 80's, but the movement known as "indie" didn't really get its moniker until the late 80's, starting, or thereabouts, with "sex, lies, and videotapes". Since then, films have been considered "indie" by a changing scale of definitions, but the idea that an "indie" movie was made "independently" of a major studio is no longer a given.
That has nothing to do with anything that ends up on screen save maybe how it looks. So from what I can gather these guys just took a bunch of movies that have nothing in common save how they were made and parodied the end result. Isn't that like spoofing any and all movies that were filmed in Hollywood and calling it "Typical Hollywood Movie". It doesn't make any sense to me.
