For one, the electricity wouldn't have lasted forever. Once that's gone, so is the food (it would spoil).

The main reason is that the zombies would have found a way in there. There was just too many of them.

Going to an island - where they thought it would be safe from any zombies is smarter than staying in a mall surrounded by thousands of them.

And at the end, they were forced out because the zombies got in anyway.
