I've been reading Kyle Baker's Plastic Man run. It's seriously not like anything out there right now.
Otherwise, anything Azzarello (about to finish up the current Batman run and then move onto Superman with Jim Lee) is good.
I love Peter David's Captain Marvel series thus far... it's been going on for a couple of years and he always has outstanding artists.
X-Statix is good, but I haven't seen a new one out in a while. Some reason, I can't help but love Doop, myself, but the characters are great and satire is biting. I also get a kick out of Allred's work, but feel dirty after noticing how much uber-zombie babe, Dead Girl, looks like Madman.
Right now, you could catch up old Exiles comics. The current run sucks (Chuck Austen's so thin, he may as well change his name to Bendis), but Judd Winick's stories were great if you have any knowledge of the Marvel universe.
I'm looking forward to seeing Byrne's art on JLA, though I'm kinda upset that people love Claremont. His stories are archaic, dry and always safe, now. Sure, he created a majority of these cliched comic stories, but that's no reason not to continue breaking ground.
And let's not forget about the Fiona Avery/J. Michael Stra...Stra... JMS run on Amazing Spider-man. And while we're on the topic of JMS, why not read Rising Stars?
Otherwise, I'd have to go with everyone else. Read Sandman books or the actual comics. Since you're reading that, look out for Gaiman's 1602, also.
Y-The Last Man and 30 Days of Night got a lot of praise from people, so you should look into that, too.
I can't stress enough how nifty Usagi Yojimbo is on a regular basis.
But, yeah... I could go on and on for pages and critique, but this should be far more than enough. Don't be scared of the mainstream books, though, as there's a lot to like right now.
