So yesterday i managed to see three movies and a couple really great looking trailers.
completely spoiler-less.... i think.
Dawn Of The Dead
- A really enjoyable hour and a half... I never saw the original so i have nothing to compare it to
as a remake, but as a film unto itself i think it had a lot going for it. Unfortunately, mekhi pfiffer
(sp?) tends to annoy me and this movie was no exception.
The Girl Next Door
- a very pleasant surprise. Lotsa positive chatter from people leaving the theatre. I was
expecting something more like Road Trip or Old School or Porky's, but instead was treated to a
very nicely filmed (courtesy of J&SBSB's DP Jamie Anderson) and excellently music-ed (fake word,
but the music supervisor was Chris Douridas formerly(?) of KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic")
trip into what seems to be best described (by me) as a blend of John Hughes meets Risky
Business. Taken as a whole i loved it (it also has one of the most disturbingly graphic moments
i've ever seen in a film).
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- i loved this movie so much. Kate Winslet gave a wonderful performance and was as cute
(cuter?) as she was in Heavenly Creatures. Jim Carrey was also fantastic and Michel Gondry gave
us a movie that is as close as hollywood will ever come to replicating the aesthetic of the french
New Wave ("breathless" and "stolen kisses" specifically come to mind). A new Beck song is always
a good thing...
now... for the TRAILERS i loved...
Garden State
- Zach Braff from Scrubs has written/directed a movie that looks absolutely stunning and which i
am officially dying to see now. Amazing cast (Natalie Portman, Zach Braff, Ian Holm, Peter
Sarsgaard, Jean Smart) and it looks gorgeous.
Saved
- Patrick Fugit, Jena Malone, Mandy Moore, Heather Matarazzo (sp?), Macaulay Culkin all go to a
Bible School.... watch the trailer. http://www.apple.com/trailers/mgm/saved/
I'm really disappointed that i didn't get a chance to see The Dreamers while it was in theaters.
