I've never seen anything like that. I've never seen a critic talk openly with a film maker about a new film that he or she did not like, so from that point of view, it was a great article.
However, to say that your movie was cliche was just plain wrong.
Maybe I'm not getting out enough. Maybe there are more movies like JG out there. One of my fears was that JG would follow the romantic comedy formula- I expected the movie to establish that Ben was a widower, and then I expected Ben to meet Liv, fall in love, have some sort of breakup, spend a good 1/3 to 2/3 of the movie dealing with the breakup, then resolve the breakup and get married and live happily ever after. THAT'S a cliche movie, and Kevin didn't do that.
So the Newsweek guy didn't like it. Well, good for him for having the balls to say it to Kevin's face.
The Newsweek guy is wrong, though, and I'm not just saying that because my name is Smithfan37. Like the Newsweek fellow, if the time comes that I don't like Kevin's work, I'll say it. It's just that now isn't that time.
