I think is how the film was received by those who saw it. As you know from Mallrats, maybe the film just needs time to find its audience. Everyone that I know thought it was a wonderfully funny, well-written, and well directed movie. Besides, it gave the ladies a chance to watch the "music pimp" himself for 2 hours!
The fact that 6 networks wanted airing rights speaks volumes, in my very humble opinion.
