: A great book to read on this subject is "Rebel Without A Crew" by Robert Rodriguez. It details, in diary form, the making of "El Mariachi", and includes a whole section on how to get your indie film made as inexpensively as possible, and how to get noticed, at least all from the way he did it. A funny book to read, and pretty informative, IMHO.
No offense to the people who swear by this book, but I found it unreadable. It's so plodding. However, that's a matter of style, I'm sure it's informative. I would recommend his commentary on the EL MARIACHI LD or DVD for anyone interested in the subject.
I would also recommend "Filmmaking at Used Car Prices". There are a number of other quality books on the subject if you go to a decent bookstore.
I'll recommend the book "Making Movies" by John Russo, if you promise to get it from the library and not purchase it. It is a fabulous resourse, but after what he did to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD for his 30th Anniversary Edition, I never want to be responsible for him to make another fucking dime.
