A great book to read on this subject is "Rebel Without A Crew" by Robert Rodriguez. It details, in diary form, the making of "El Mariachi", and includes a whole section on how to get your indie film made as inexpensively as possible, and how to get noticed, at least all from the way he did it. A funny book to read, and pretty informative, IMHO.
