Why do you have it in for Lucas so much? Maybe I'm taking it more harshly than you meant it,(the disadvantage of a message board - inflections greatly affect sentence interpretation) but it seems like you hate the poor guy. Why for?
The man is a great story-teller. Period. Sure, some of you film snobs try to get intellectual and over-analytical about the medium, but you have to step back once and a while and realize that it's all just about story-telling. Pure and simple. Those who deny that and try to put filmmaking on a pedestel are the soulless ones.
I don't buy the theory that Lucas just does it for the money and merchandising now. Wake up! Next to Bill fucking Gates, Lucas is the last person on the face of the earth who needs to act on feduciary concerns. He owns half of Hollywood. his fans demanded another film. And so he made it.
To say that his newest is a sellout from his earlier efforts is to read way too much into it. Much like those critics that said Kevin sold out by making 'rats. Just because someone has money to toy with does not make them any less able to create a film.
Unfortunately, sometimes in the "rebel" generation from which you come, it is considered "cool" to bash those whom everyone else respects. And so knowing that George Lucas is a king among story-tellers, you feel the need to tear him down so you can think you're the shit. Well you're not the shit. I haven't seen your film(s), so I can't judge your filmmaking prowess, hell you may just be as good as you think, but that's no reason to destroy those who made it possible for you to be here in the first place. People like Lucas paved the way for the independent filmmaker who just wants to tell his stories. Those of us who had to struggle to get where we are appreciate that.
Those who were simply handed a $40,000 check from our friend don't, I suppose.
