Characters are written so that you care about what happens to them, and we're unsure of what happened to Bartelby during the movie, so we're discussing it after the movie.
Here's what happened to Bartleby during the movie: He killed people. He was going to walk through the church doors and unmake existence, but God stopped him. She hugged him. He said "Thank you". God made his head explode. The movie ended. Ben Affleck went home. Alanis did too. Hope this answers any questions you might have had.
