: : when you film the second clerks movie are you going to use the style that you did in the first one?, my segestion is no, use better camera work and sound but keep to the black and white film format.:
: I told a friend of mine that Kevin was making a sequel to Clerks and his first response was something to the extent of, "Man, it'd better be in black and white! It...it...it just won't work if its in color!" To which I responded, "Why not?" His only reply was, "It just wouldn't be right."
Hmmm, well, I know it was a monetary decision to go with B&W in the first flick...but I do think that the monochrome world that Dante and Randal lived in reflected their boredom, their directionlessness, their malaise.
If one looks at "Clerks" again, I think the lack of color is almost a character in itself. It says "Yes, things are THAT bad. This is what my life has become...no color, no excitement."
One time in art class a teacher once said that you can derive meaning from something in a piece even if it wasn't consciously intended. I think this would fall under such a statement. Even though Kevin wasn't thinking it, it has become a part of the movie...and as such can't be easily dismissed.
I know Kevin will do right by it no matter what. It's his universe and he is keenly aware of what is in it. But I think that automatically starting with color in the sequel would be too jarring. I mean, our "heroes" aren't in color. At least, they haven't been...yet. :)
