In reading what others have said, concerning this mini dogma debate, I have to agree with what most fo you are saying...
Maybe Bartleby and Loki COULD be forgiven by God if they became human...you know, go to confession, etc. Only problem, they had to admit guilt and ask for forgiveness. I think it's pretty clear that Bartleby was in no way about to ask for forgiveness, not until the end of the movie. Loki, I don't know...but the point is they felt wronged by God, not anything resembling repentence.
And sure, B looked like a total bastard until the very end, when it took seeing God to realize what he was doing. Point is, he realized it, and he remembered his love for God...just look at ben's face and you know that. Maybe he was gone from God too long, and forgot the love because he felt abandoned. I think we can all relate to that in one way or another.
The plenary indulgence was their way of getting into heaven without asking for forgiveness for something they still felt was not wrong. In my humble opinion, that is the answer to the human/confession debate.
As for Wisconsin, I don't know how they got to leave it, either. I'm curious as well.
As for the Indians comment, I agree. There was nothing in the film discussing the appearance of the angels, but I would think they would appear to humans in any form which would allow them to blend in.
oh, and Kevin, if you end up reading any of this...how much are you enjoying the fact that your film has spawned such debate? I know I am.
