Isn't it true that in the Catholic religion, if you confess your sins to a preist and ask forgiveness you go to Heaven? And in the protestant religion, all you have to do, theoretically speaking, is ask Jesus to be your savior and you're sins are absolved. So why coudln't the angels have just cut off their wings, turned into humans, asked the priest for forgiveness (or Jesus personally through prayer like other humans), gotten killed and gone to Heaven? Why the need for the archway to clean the slate before they died?

If they did that there would be no way to stop them and the movie would have been like 10 minutes long.
