:and that's the opening scene with Linda Fiorentino sitting in church. She :KNOWS the church is too caught up in its rules (whether she's consciously :aware of this or not), and even questions her own faith--but, by God (ha), :there she is every single Sunday. Why? Because she knows that the :problem isn't the church itself, but its focus away from God and onto :rules, and in spite of the church's centuries-long cluelessness, she still :has faith (and faith in the Church as a proper outlet for worship). And :so, I think, does Kevin.
No, she's there outta habit. she had shit for faith: does 'i think god is dead' ring a bell (I dont think you can judge her subconcious thought processes)? Look at the masses of people that goto church, do you think they're all there because they have believe? Its a routine that's been ingrained in their mind year after year: fuckoff all week, sit through a boring mass whilst not initiating any change/ reflect on life, repeat. To me, if a person TRULY had the faith, they would never be sad...they would never be bored. Like the kid in American Beauty. ..he became aware of this outside benevolent force, and how did that effect him? he knew that nothing would ever go wrong, he had an appreciation for all that was around him, etc.
Of course, people would also be a hell of a lot happier if we had more midgets around.
