I don't remember there being chromium on DC/Marvel; I think it might have taken place after all that crap started to die out.

And Valiant and Image were rather important around the time of Mallrats. Image had taken all the rising stars from Marvel (Lee, McFarlane, Larsen, Silvestri, Liefeld). And Valiant was run by Jim Shooter, who was Marvel's Editor In Chief in the 80's. So when Deathmark happened, a lot of people sat up and took notice.
