I'd have to say she was talking about DC/Marvel Amalgam. It occurred right around the time period when Mallrats was written and I do believe there were variant chromium covers (but don't quote me on that). And I don't think Valiant and Image would be considered two major comic book labels.

: Back in '92 or '93 Valient comics and Image comics had a huge crossover event, I can't remember what it was called, The first and last issues of this event had chromium covers. This was during the period when every company was producing the worst crap with the shiniest covers in order to pander to the same market that bought collector cards.
